Charles A. Greene still speaks fondly of running over to his grandfather's carpet store as a young boy and arranging samples to his heart's content. The textures and colors never ceased to fascinate him, giving him a long history of instinctive taste and acumen.
Grandfather Charles F. Greene acquired the site on 3 Elm street in 1940 and ran the business under The Original Saxonville Carpet Store and Turnpike Rug Mart. The company was handed down through the family line to Sumner A. Greene, and then to his son and current proprietor Charles A. Greene. You might say that carpeting is woven into the very fabric of their family.
The younger Charles worked with his father at the company right out of high school, learning the craft and helping build the business. After Sumner's passing in the late 1980s, Charles continued as owner for several years, then served for several years as facilities project manager at Bose Corporation. His certificate in facilities engineering from Northeastern and his years at Bose gave him wide experience with every aspect of building maintenance.
"I've always enjoyed color and textures," Charles says now. "And, working with people creatively to make their homes beautiful is very rewarding for me. I see it as a form of self-expression." He stays up-to-date on carpeting trends and styles, always providing cutting edge color palettes and the latest materials.
Charles also has a commitment to giving back to the community that made the company so successful. Often providing pro bono services and donating a percentage of sales to special causes, Charles knows that being in business means more than just making a sale.
